1843 - Opera "Bohemian Girl" is produced (London)
1903 - Opera "Die Heugierigen Frauen" is produced (Munich)
1965 - Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'Whipped Cream & Other Delights'.
1970 - George Harrison released All Things Must Pass. The triple album included a number of songs that were left over from Beatle sessions, the set would go on to be certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA, making it the best selling album by a solo Beatle. 
1981 - The British Phonographic industry placed advertisements in the press claiming that 'home taping was wiping out music'. The Boomtown Rats, 10CC, Elton John and Cliff Richard all backed the campaign.
2006 - Sir Cliff Richard lost a battle to extend the number of years that musicians could receive royalties for their records. Richard wanted copyright to last 95 years, rather than the present 50 years, but an independent review recommend the terms would not change. Sir Cliff's earliest big hit ‘Move It’, recorded in 1958 would start to come out of copyright in 2008.

1958 - Johnny Cash, made his debut on the US country chart when ’Cry! Cry! Cry!’ made it to number 14. His next seven singles would all make the country top 10, with ‘I Walk the Line’ and ‘There You Go’ both hitting number 1. 
1968 - Cream played their farewell concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Also on the bill were Yes and Taste. 
1994 - Boyz II Men started their 14th and final week at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I'll Make Love To You' giving them the longest run in chart history along with 'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston. 
2000 - The Beatles went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'Beatles 1.'

Today in Music History

1955 - Carl Perkins recorded 'Blue Suede Shoes' at Sun Studios in Memphis. The rock 'n' roll classic became a US No.2 & UK No.10 hit for Perkins in 1956, and has been covered by many acts including Elvis Presley and John Lennon. 
1964 - The Supremes became the first all girl group to have a UK No.1 single when 'Baby Love' went to the top of the charts.
2004 - Record producer Terry Melcher, who was behind hits by the Byrds, Ry Cooder and the Beach Boys, died aged 62 after a long battle with skin cancer. The son of actress Doris Day, he co-wrote ‘Kokomo’ for the Beach Boys, produced Mr Tambourine Man for the Byrds, as well as hits for The Mamas and the Papas.
2006 - A guitar played by George Harrison was set to fetch more than £100,000 at a London auction. The Maton MS500 guitar was used on The Beatles first album.

1952 - Pianist Johnnie Johnson hired 26 year old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. While playing evening gigs in the St. Louis area, Berry kept his day job as a hairdresser for the next three years.
1959 - The Quarry Men decided to change their name to Johnny and the Moondogs. The band were in Liverpool auditioning for the Carrol Levis show. The Quarry Men featured John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
1967 - Iggy and the Stooges made their live debut when they played at a Halloween party in Michigan.
2005 - the white suit worn by John Lennon on the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road album sold for $118,000 (£66,385) at an auction in Las Vegas. And an Austin Princess hearse driven by the late star in the documentary Imagine sold for $150,000 (£84,388). A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the items went to Amnesty International.
