  • Russia's rouble dominated stock exchange, the MICEX, fell steeply when trade resumed after a one-day limit-down halt, prompting confusing suspension announcements and orders to the contrary from the markets watchdog.(The Guardian)
  • Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin questioned the commitment of the EU to the construction of the Nord Stream pipeline to establish the natural gas delivery network, saying "Europe must decide whether it needs this pipeline or not". European Commission spokesman stated later "The EU continues to strongly support the Nord Stream pipeline". (Wall Street Journal)
  • A judge in Taipei, Taiwan rules that the former President Chen Shui-bian, should be held in jail while prosecutors seek his conviction on charges of money laundering and corruption. (The New York Times)
  • Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi calls deployment of U.S. missile defence in Poland and Czech Republic a 'provocation' against Russian Federation. (RAI), (Il Sole 24 ore)
  • India's Chandrayaan-1 lunar exploration mission successfully completes its journey to the Moon, entering its intended operational orbit 100 kilometers (62 mi) above the surface. (CNN-IBN)
